Jean Paul Gaultier @ SS2014 Haute Couture Collection

Jean Paul Gaultier SS2014 Haute Couture Collection with Sophia Loren on the front row and Dita von Teese on the catwalk, the runway show was theatrical, ambitious and had all the signature joir de vivre.

Beginning with black tailored trousers and curvy skits worn in billowing jewel-colored chiffon blouse featuring huge voluminous sleeves, the show took the butterfly as a focus - they flutters over headpieces and clustered over jewelled mesh dresses in coral and red, before the veins of their wings formed black netting over column dresses of shimmering emerald and ruby.

Frothy  dresses of layered black and ref chiffon fit the stage, while red fishing net tube skirts burst into huge mermaid hemlines of white chiffon and sexy lace-backed dresses had the typical courtesan appeal that has served Gaultier so well.

The headdresses grew to epic, feathered antennae proportions, before Gaultier's favorite black leather biker jacket appeared as a gown with white tulle mermaid hemline and a nude sheath dress followed it strung with a treasure trove of pearls, before the bride appeared, her headdress almost worthy of a scaffolding all its own. Paris high fashion at its most entertaining indeed.
