PICNIC On Forbes @ Brittany's Thursday Seafood Night

In Europe, Thursday is when most people get their weekly pay cheque and also ending the work week to welcome the weekend ahead. Hence, Thursday is the day that people begin to spend their earning on shopping and wine & dine with friends. When on the other side of this world in Hong Kong at PICNIC on Forbes, Thursday means the evening for seafood night out as this is the day that where the fresh catch are delivered on the same day. By mylifestylenews.

This summer, PICNIC On Forbes introduces the Thursday seafood night by Chef Stephane Guillas from Brittany by bringing his hometown best fresh seafood to Hong Kong. Trust us, with all the seafood buffet spread that you have been consuming in most hotel’s restaurant in town are too generic and not until you have come here to check out their seafood platters that includes oysters, red prawns and scampi, Tourteau crab, sea snails.

Other seafood on the menu includes marinated fish, whole John Dory, Moules frites, fish soup, grilled lobster and just to name a few……all from Brittany to your table with limited items served depending on the day’s delivery. You shall then realize what you have been missing in the past seafood buffet that you have been hitting on.

Since its opening on the 1st December 2015, this latest destination in Kennedy Town has become a new hang out for food lovers, thanks to the extension of the MTR system that has made it easier for everyone to commute to the less explored western part of the Hong Kong island rediscovered.

The concept is relaxed, friendly and informal that is reminiscent of a French café designed by Tim Shepherd of Two Men in Hats with the cocktail bar, dining area, rotisserie and cheese display merged into a spacious open plan dining room. The cheeses are worth mentioning and they are curated by Jeremy Evrard, Hong Kong’s premier fromagier as well as a carefully selected wine list by Nicolas Deneux.

The menu evokes the casual French Café culture and seafood is the only reason we came for this visit. Our <Seafood Platters> - serves two arrived to a pleasant surprise for its variety and freshness from its taste. The color combination and presentation is a definite must photograph by all diners and catches attention from other tables.

The top tier is filled with Tourteau Crab and Prawns and down below are spread out with Scampi, Sea Snails, Brittany Oysters includes the Gillardeau, Fine de Claire and Isigny served Yuzu Granite and Shallot Cream as dressing. FRRRRESH is the only word to describe this fresh catch Thursday delivery. Highly recommended and worth what you paid for.

<Bouchot Mussels Mariniere> is to follow next. These small little mussels came with quite a full on flesh with every flesh that still remain in the shell. The light garlic sauce was delightful.

Jeremy insisted us to order the <Lobster Lagsana> and mind you it is not the classic Lagsana that you used to have but this one comes with the veal sweetbreads, wild mushroom and extremely rich and aromatic shellfish Bisque. It is simply divine!

We then jumped ship to try something from the farm to switch our palette to poultry. The <88 Days’Free Range Chicken> is another creation by Chef Guillas that not to be missed. The quarter chicken served with roasted potatoes does us fine without over indulging. If you were to have this dish alone as its own serve, we suggest you order the whole chicken. It is perfectly roasted to get the light crisp of the skin and yet remain real moist inside.

We intended to skip dessert but dining with a female friend, we just can’t walk out the restaurant without doing so. Plus, the knowledgeable and friendly wait staff had us the <Far Breton> - a salted caramel ice cream to end our evening.

This casual and warm-hearted new dine-out by Phillipe Orrico after his successful opening of Upper Modern Bistro and ON Dining, Kitchen & Lounge paying homage to the French Café and roasted culture by delivering different concepts and playing with various ways of cooking is what inspired Orrico since his move to Hong Kong. Lucky us being a frequent diner to explore his gastronomy prepared in such invention.
