THE MACALLAN x LALIQUE @ Second Stunning 1930’S Inspired Decanter

The Macallan has unveiled its latest LALIQUE collaboration with the release of the second decanter from The Macallan Golden Age of Travel series. Exclusive to global travel retail, this collectable range re-lives the glamour of the 1930s and celebrates the first era of international travel by road, rail, sea, and air. The highly anticipated second release features an exceptionally rare period Macallan, distilled in 1937. This scarce Macallan vintage was first bottled in 1972, and rebottled in 2016. The whisky is beautifully showcased in a handcrafted LALIQUE crystal decanter, of which only 50 have been made, and features an illustration of an early passenger aeroplane, commemorating the glamorous days of trans-Atlantic adventures.

Rustic gold in colour, with an intense smoothness and comforting flavours of thick honey, dry ginger, cinnamon and apple pie that delight the palate. The beautifully light natural colour and gentle spice notes suggest a higher proportion of second fill Spanish sherry-seasoned oak casks were used, supported by American oak, a result of the shortage of casks during the years of the Spanish Civil War. In spite of its age and display of classic Macallan richness, this whisky has remained agile buoyed by the light subtlety of the supporting flavours and long smooth finish. Geoff Kirk, Director of Prestige for The Macallan, said: “The Golden Age of Travel series fits seamlessly with our global travel retail offering by taking us back to a time when international travel was a time of romance, glamour and elegance. The first decanter proved highly popular and we fully expect this second release to stimulate the same interest, making it a must have for collectors of The Macallan around the world. “This very rare and special Macallan single malt whisky distilled in 1937, combined with a highly exclusive crystal decanter from our friends and partners at LALIQUE, make this yet another exquisite and standout collaboration.”

LALIQUE’s Chairman and CEO Silvio Denz, said: "The glamorous Golden Age of Travel is one which is synonymous with Lalique and its founding father, René Lalique who created some of his finest works that now define the era including the iconic panels that decorated the dining carriage aboard the Orient Express. With a shared passion for craftsmanship, honouring tradition and know how gained over generations, Lalique and The Macallan are kindred spirits. We are delighted to continue our partnership with the second decanter in the Golden Age of Travel series, creating unique work of the finest quality and technical complexity." Each decanter in the series is contained within a beautiful premium leather presentation box created by leather masters Piñavall in Ubrique, Spain. Piñavall is renowned for their work with some of the world’s leading fashion brands. In keeping with the Golden Age of Travel theme, the box consciously evokes design elements of classic 1930’s travel trunks and luggage. The series was first launched in 2015 with the release of the Lalique cruise liner expression, the second iteration paves the way for three further decanter designs inspired by the automobile, the steam train, and the airship. These decanters will be released, over the next four years. Released in April 2017, through Global Travel Retail, there will be just 48 of each decanter offered for sale exclusively through key airports. Two decanters will be kept for The Macallan and LALIQUE archives. The recommended retail price of the decanter will be US$40,000.
