LUNG KING HEEN - A Taste of Refined Cantonese Cuisine

Dining in the world’s first Chinese restaurant that was recognized with the coveted Michelin three-star rating, retained for fourteen consecutive years so far…..and still counting, is the right choice that you could have made when visiting Hong Kong. Lung King Heen dazzles you with its  exquisite seafood and delicate dim sum that is what you are craving for together with its quick and slick service that would complete your haute dining experience for a taste of refined Cantonese cuisine. mylifestylenews writes.

The Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong is one of the pre-eminent luxury hotels in the city
of lights and gourmet delights and it is also one of the few prestige hotels that has multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, which is not an easy feat
By retaining its 3 Michelin-starred title rating for more than a decade is never an easy task to upkeep the ultimate quality of standard from its infamous refined Cantonese cuisine, thanks to the utmost dedicated culinary team led by multiple awards winning veteran Executive Chinese Chef Chan Yan Tak who strives to deliver the unforgotten Canton flavour from his handling of relishing local master dishes.

With over a century of accumulated experience, Master Chef Chan may not think that the grass is always greener on the other side to become a culinary star. Being a native Hong Konger, the highly respectable Master Chef Chan in the culinary scene has spent his entire life in the city discovering and sourcing the best suited ingredients that magically transform to his culinary skill in the only open secret that has won him multiple starred recognitions especially being awarded the first Chinese chef in history for three Michelin stars with Lung King Heen. Hence, dining in the esteemed Lung King Heen with much anticipation and expectation is to savour the star-awarded culinary delights and to explore the successful story behind the show is more like a pilgrimage to dedicated foodies and gourmands.

A restaurant with such starry accolades would usually lead one to think that it is going to be an exciting arrival experience, but it was not exactly as we had thought, as there was zero “WOW’ factor in its understated luxury interior design which failed to make an impression by lacking any grand eye-catching decorative object or ornament that would instantly become your most-talked-about subject even before being seated.

A
s the dining room has a very low ceiling which may place limitations on what they can do, with a location facing the harbour on the fourth floor, you may angle a table with a a direct view of the Victoria Harbour overlooking straight across to the Kowloon side and with great natural lighting from the large windows. You could argue it is all about the view, we felt something was missing in that moment of being seated and taking in the surroundings.

Perhaps a dramatic floral arrangement may help to brighten the dull interior and make it stand out as the restaurant appearance seems to not have an uplifting renovation for a very long timeA mix of dated oriental Chinese chairs doesn’t seem to make a real statement juxtaposed with some clunky old style brown chairs and the ballroom banquet style wallpaper wrap around stimulates a more western dining fit-out than to remind you that you are actually in a typical classic Chinese restaurant. It is rather a confused mix, visually and does not really quite fit in to a well-deserved 3 star Michelin rating, at least not to our liking and subsequently, we found it under-whelming.

Besides, due to the exposed floor boards in the main dining area and vaulted ceiling treatment, the room had a lot of echo, so the above ordinary lunch chatter was being amplified and we found it very noisy – immediately turned into a more canteen-like dining than a high end restaurant.

However, dining in Lung King Heen is about that umami experience and they do find ways to dress to impress and dining the true Cantonese way whereby the whole focus is on foodWe were quickly presented with a menu and decisions were made from the classic set menu for which they have become renowned.

Our
lunch was kicked off by an appetizer of stir-fried string beans with caramelized shallots that was quite a savoury taste with a delicate flavor and palate opener together with a strong dark and thick pot of Pu Er tea.

<Steamed Shrimp Dumpling with Bamboo Shoots & Steamed Mushroom Dumpling with Preserved Vegetable and Chinese Celery>
This steamed dim sum duo came in a steamy bamboo basket laid on a thin slice of carrot to prevent the delicate paste wrapping getting too soggy or sticking onto the basket during the steaming process. The shrimp dumpling was light and a whole fresh crunchy prawn was enhanced by the bamboo shoots and an elevated hint of sweet flavour on the palate while the mushroom dumpling was equally tasty and with the added delight of the refined diced Chinese celery. The fillings were so tasty and gave a very nostalgic childhood memory in all aspects which were expertly put together. Both dumplings were delicately handmade with the right thin flour paste that is never too chewy on the palate and was a perfect mouthful size. You may savour this delicate dim sum with their very homemade condiments of mushroom sauce that was a highlight. The only disappointment for this sampling order was it only came in one piece each tempting you to crave for another serving.

<Baked Barbecued Pork Bun with Pine Nuts>
It would be a shame if you were to miss out by ordering this delicious savoury which is by far the best baked barbecued pork bun that we have ever tasted in Hong Kong! Light crusted top in golden color, it is utterly delicious and well baked with very tasty fillings of a very refined style of proper chunks of barbecued pork. This is an absolute true savoury winner.

<Superior Pottage with Shredded Chicken>
While a warm broth or soup will warm your heart, this superb thick and rich pottage (not a soup) has truly paid homage to the unwavering respect for tradition. Lots of chicken was used to boil and extract the essence from reduction to get the thickness in consistency which is so flavoursome, with an elevated use of vegetables and fungus that overall creates that winning flavor and texture. Let the pottage speak by itself to delight your palate. Very heart warming and satisfying as every mouthful is heavenly!

<Chef’s Signature Trio Appetiser>
This delectable Chef’s signature trio appetiser consists of the Crispy Suckling Pig with Chinese Pancake sat on a mulberry leaf that made the centre piece on the plate. Light and crispy golden brown layer with skin which creates that desirable crackling sound with a gentle bite. The meat laying behind the crispy skin was just a little too dry and lacking that moist juicy flavor that we were expecting but the Poached Chicken with Mashed Ginger and Spring Onions was very delicate and delightful, due to the juicy silky skin (fat reduced) and finely minced ginger and spring onion, with the chicken meat poached to perfection and was the perfect accompaniment of the entire combination. While Jelly fish may not be everyone’s cup of tea, Chef Chan’s version of Marinated Red Jellyfish in Sesame Oil is an absolute must have to enjoy for its aromatic sesame oil that is never too oily nor pungent that brings out the best crunchy texture of the bland (if cannot be anything but in its natural flavour) Jelly fish.

<Baked Sea Bass Fillet with Sweet Soy Sauce>
Beautifully presented in a generous serving portion. The meaty sea bass was deliciously baked and sat on a sizable bed of poached spinach that absorbed all flavours from the delightful sweet soy sauce, delicately garnished with shredded ginger and sprinkled with golden crispy whitebait. The sea bass was expertly cooked and exactly of how a good flesh of chunky fish meat should be treated as it was still firm to touch and juicy in the centre. Each morsel was to die for and had a few different levels of complexity on the palate with the shredded ginger juxtaposed with the crispy whitebait and young spinach leaves well balanced with the gentle touch of sweet soy sauce. A stunning dish!

<Poached Seasonal Vegetables in Supreme Soup>
Simplicity at is best! This clear consommé with intense flavour extracts from the premium ham and chicken stock to create this supreme soup is the highlight, garnished with fine julienne supreme ham that goes well with the not overly poached vegetable and is the perfect palate cleanser after some complex favours of palatable dishes that were previously served.

<Lung King Heen Fried Rice with Assorted Seafood>
There are many variations of fried rice one can have, but this one was done for the best. This rendition was a picture of fluffy rice texture well wok-fried with lobster, prawn, crab and scallop and the use of the prawn head to permeate the rice with that umami taste that you can actually ‘taste the sea’. Simply divine and satisfying at this point in our lunch culinary sojourn.

<Chilled Mango and Sago Cream with Pomelo>
Light and creamy, the mango pomelo sago was chilled in perfect coolness and super refreshing and packed with full pureed mango flavours, well balanced with the coconut milk and the chewy sago pearl and juicy pomelo serves as a great summer dessert or soupy drink. It was then followed by Chinese petits fours that consists of one piece of aromatic almond roasted biscuit and a sweet-scented soft waxy osmenthus cake. Less is more in Lung King Heen, either from the esteemed carefully crafted menu or the right size bite of dim sum as well as its picturesque presentation that all comes into a thoughtful consideration to delight you in all aspects with the authentic taste of traditional Cantonese cuisine. With all the extra touches, we found some great refinement from the food that is excellent in taste.

Fast paced service was delivered yet if a little more focus oriented on engaging with guests instead of a robotic delivery with the coming and going approach is an area that could improve.
There is no doubt that the kitchen team is talented, so finding ways to match this in the front of house should be equally a priority. The lunch crowd during our visit were mostly locals and it was clear that their focus was just on the food, whereas we were looking for that elevation on all counts of Lung King Heen’s recognition and accomplishment. Greatness never ends, but evolves with experience with the pinnacle of quality gastronomy in the promising hands of Master Chef Chan at the helm among his dedicated culinary team. By withholding all the details, if you can’t find a dish that you want to eat here not only to enjoy at its best, there is a fair chance that you just don’t like food, because there is so much to enjoy!

DoubleTree by Hilton Taipei Zhongshan - A Prime Staycation Landmark

While the little things mean everything especially when it is coming from a full service hotel with a few other limitations, DoubleTree by Hilton Taipei Zhongshan offers more than just that with a 4 star deluxe hospitality that makes them stand out from many others. mylifestylenews writes.

When you choose a DoubleTree by Hilton chains for accommodation, many travellers would compare and expect to receive a Hilton class of standard service yet DoubleTree by Hilton’s concept is different from the family of Hilton brands with accommodation that focuses more on a lifestyle basis by offering a sleek and carefree no-muss-no-fuss swift stay.

The hotel can be found in 47 countries, with more than 587 properties currently open, this hotel brand is favoured by guests (young executives and families) that are willing to pay a premium for a higher-quality stay. While the brand focuses on the business/leisure guests that may only require the basic amenities, the modern comfort with contemporary chic design adding the vibe and colour with some properties that even went a step further for the tech-savvy features offered as well as arty installations and outstanding design ornaments on display to admire.

With the touch of modernity and features offering more than just the basic and the right amount of facilities and amenities that have set the trends ever since, not forgetting that the location chosen for this hotel brand is logistically being thought through, DoubleTree by Hilton Taipei Zhongshan sits handsomely in one of the city most vibrant Zhongshan financial and commercial business districts. Subsequently, you get to enjoy the tourists’ sights such as the local art precincts and museums (old and new), a vibrant shopping and entertainment area to explore, indulge yourself in those renown local street food night markets, take a stroll in the city's tranquil Linsen Park which are all within minutes walking distance.

DoubleTree by Hilton Taipei Zhongshan is conveniently accessed by metro via Zhongshan station as well as Taipei Main Station which allows you to connect to the Airport Express train in a jiffy transfer to Taipei Taoyuan International Airport. The hotel has 106 elegantly designed rooms and suites and it really punches above its weight in our estimation and this four years old premises looks like it was opened yesterday.

The large and spacious lobby encompasses the arrival and departure experience and features a modern and contemporary interior with comfort zone lounge area and a communal table extended to the back of the foyer, separated by a glasshouse of paper butterflies circulating two pieces of giant mountain logs and hanging plants by bringing the nature view indoors as a unique installation set centre stage upon entering the hotel.

Further aback is La Salle lobby lounge looking over an internal courtyard and decorated by the giant ceiling high of mosaic set in colorful digital images of peony representation. A rather cool place to chill during cocktails happy hour.

We arrived early morning and were bowled over by the amazing energy and service from the engaging team member Sharon from front desk who checked us in. Sharon was uplifting and cheerful and personally made us feel so warm and time efficient making. Despite the regular check-in time is at 3pm, our room wasn’t ready inevitably and she handled and stored our luggage well without much worries. Her cheerful approach left us quite a good impression together with her fellow front line team.

After a few hours walk to explore the vibrant neighbourhood, on return, the same vibrant energy was presented with Sharon’s hospitality who had our room ready and proceeded to our King Corner Room with Balcony on the 15th floor. Don’t look down as the low rise rooftop view below is not so chic, but in essence gives you a taste of how the locals live. But, if you look farther ahead, the 33sqm room gives us a direct view to Taipei 101 in the distance with an outdoor balcony access which is the view that you would like to wake up for.

Toilet and bathroom are separated and delightfully comes with the automatic smart bidet. The sensibly combined bath and shower room is spacious and evidently had taken up some space for the room fit out. The sleek one touch button is easily activated for the best power shower of your life, no need annoying taps or levers to turn, with a choice of handheld or rain shower which is an absolute joy to freshen up with. Quality bathroom room amenities such as Crabtree & Evelyn is also chosen to soften and pamper your weary skin.

On top of that, complimentary and well selected TWG teabags and a great new Nespresso coffee machine together with all the other essentials you might require are well placed on top of the mini bar where most luxury hotels don’t even offer such a premium selection which is another added bonus value to this DoubleTree by Hilton Taipei Zhongshan property. Despite the room design within the living area being rather narrow and crowded with a single piece of lounge chair and a work desk, the large king bed is extremely comfortable to unwind with linens and pillows and enough storage space to unpack our suitcases. Overall, the room is a thoughtfully well-designed space and ticking all the boxes.

A small and compact gym is available on the 3rd floor to sweat out the excess calories.

The hotel has only one proper all-day dining restaurant on level two that serves an amazing semi-buffet breakfast. The semi-buffet set up may not be as lavish as you think yet offering enough hearty selection to start your day. Don’t miss out on the fresh passion fruit juice and kiwi juice which is delightfully tasty that made an unexpected value.

A well-presented Bento style set breakfast comes with a quality choice of unlimited serving of Western or Asian being served to your table after ordering.

Savanna - the hostess and server keeps her eagle eyes in all counts, fast and efficient who also has a subtle sense of humor and somehow has an encyclopedic memory, so after asking for something specific on the first day, she made sure it was prepared every day thereafter, which made us feel very special. She was also kind and considerate in other ways that displayed to us a great customer service ethic and a desire to create experiences for guests beyond expectations.

DoubleTree by Hilton Taipei Zhongshan is punching above its weight and could show a thing or two to some other luxury hotel brands. With many aspects being thoughtfully considered, this property have set a prime staycation landmark and outdone other DoubleTree by Hilton in many sensible elements and touches that could win the hearts of their return guests.

Vivienne Tam 摩登六嬸和三太公的麻雀耍樂 2023 春夏時裝系列

Vivienne Tam

GLORIA RESIDENCE - A Welcoming Sense of Homeliness

Well situated in a vibrant district where the new blends in with the old, Gloria Residence is nestled within Taipei’s Zhongshan - Linsen business district where great location meets culture and art in a vibrant neighbourhood, which is what you need when you are in search of a modern comfort contemporary serviced apartel stay in Taipei. mylifestylenews writes.

Just a stones throw away from the action, Gloria Residence is easily accessed by local metro between the two main lines of Zhongshan station and Shuanglian station. The apartel is no stranger to the locals and expats living for its idealistic locale and is a convenient way in to so many amenities, whether it be for business and commercial activities, leisure shopping around Qingguang shopping district or sightseeing. Immerse yourself in the cultural and creative Museum of Contemporary Art as well as the nostalgic and historical Dadaocheng old town, not forgetting those salivating eateries and local street food from the nearby Ningxia Night Market which are all within easy reach.

While there are many hotels for short stays with the foreseeable amenities, the options get shorter if you are looking for a long stay serviced apartment hotel with all the right amenities and the Gloria Residence ticks all the boxes while nestled in a great location and a buzzing and vibrant neighbourhood.
Despite our perspective from the outside it is very nondescript based on our first impression as we arrived on a cloudy day and it doesn’t always show the building off to its best advantage, but the building is the work of a master architect Jun Aoki based on the concept of “paradise”. The façade decorated with over two million mosaic tiles with the intention of creating a rippling effect from the reflecting sunlight especially during a bright sunny day, when the effect is more vivid.

The lobby is small and with a low ceiling, so there is not much of a real arrival experience that many other hotels offer, other than an arty wooden structure front desk that is made out of pieces of logs of wood, contrasting the dark marble tone wall and pillars with oak furniture for a bold atmosphere. The full glass windows don’t draw much natural light from the main street despite being on the ground level, while the cozy foyer is brightened by a few standing lamps placed at each corner. We would have to assume that potential long stay guests aren’t looking for enormous lobbies and that wow factor on arrival, but rather intimate apartments that provide ample amounts of space and allow you to not have to use outside conveniences.

The narrow lift took us to the guest floor that is more like an residential apartment block fit out with white floor and wall tiles, but the moment you open the door to your home away from home, it is as if you are in another place. As long stay apartments go, our 64sqm Royal B Room one bedroom apartment fit out is rather harmonious, combining an oriental design motif with oak furniture and a warm colour scheme, creating an inviting and pleasant atmosphere.
The natural color wooden floorboards, black dining table and chairs and kitchen cabinets create that oriental and minimalist zen feeling, juxtaposed against the white bedroom linen and beige walls. The sizable bathroom has a light coloured rustic stone tiled floor, a bathtub and generous walk-in high pressure shower as well as a washlets toilet which was a bonus delight.

The large walk-in closet is well designed and placed behind the wall of the King size bed. Also, there are two walls of windows, one overlooking the main street of Linsen road that draws some good natural light to flood the apartment. There are drawers everywhere, so you will not be short of storage especially for those who check-in for a longer stay.

A
fully kitted out kitchenette, an all-in-one washer dryer on the outside balcony and space on the balcony to hang your laundry is extended for this cozy apartel suite home-style living. The overall impression of the room is of a high standard, as the choice of materials are of a high quality and the layout gives enough space and is not too cluttered. It is well balanced with intrigue and ease, contemporary simplicity and a welcoming sense of homeliness.

Although Gloria Residence does not provide any food & beverage or a full service restaurant, there is the 24/7 guest lounge in the basement where you can avail yourself of snacks, tea and coffee and soft drinks any time of the day - all complimentary for in-house guests and it is a capacious space where you can find a corner away from other guests to enjoy some peace and quiet outside of your apartment. Not to mention there are dozens of restaurants within a short walk radius, so location is everything.

There is also an indoor pool perfect for swimming laps and has an aspect overlooking the outside garden which is most enjoyable and gives you that residential feel. Our overnight stay was too short yet sweet with the basic needed amenities and friendly and helpful front desk service rendered to discover this vibrant and colorful neighbourhood in Taipei. Gloria Residence has just the basic and right amenities to make your stay restful and pleasant for you to fit in right here.
